Estonia is a little big nation of Animation.
For a country of some two million inhabitants, it has a long record of international animation festival awards and many, well-know and revered animators.

(“Little Big Estonia: The Nukufilm Studio” by Heikki Jokinen)

About animation …
… More specially, I was impressed by the productions of one “new” country: Estonia.
There were mainly extremely rich and pointed films d’auteur which give a rather unexpected image of what can happen in this country at the current moment. For the most part, these productions are highly innovative and demonstrate a very great artistic rigour. After a long period of state-financed productions which ultimately showed very little concern for the audience and commercial criteria, the trend in many Central and Eastern European countries was towards the production of works which I would characterise as opportunist. In complete opposition to this, the Estonian productions presented at the Screening took risks which one rarely sees these days, with new freedom of tone. Most of these productions are the work of the Estonian studio OÜ Nukufilm, whose productions include both films d’auteur and works intended for a larger audience. I am thinking notably of the productions for children.
